Student-athletes in five sports led or shared the lead for the highest Academic Progress Rates in the Colonial Athletic Association.
The Elon University Athletics Department posted some of its best Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores in its history, according to new scores from 2017 through 2021 released Tuesday by the NCAA. Thirteen of the university’s 17 teams had the same or better APR when compared to a year ago.
All 17 sports have multi-year APR rates at or above the national four-year APR of 984. Football, men’s golf, women’s basketball, softball and volleyball led or share the lead in their respective sports for the highest APR scores in the Colonial Athletic Association.
“Today’s news continues to reflect the commitment to academic excellence by our student-athletes,” said Elon Director of Athletics Dave Blank. “It takes a great amount of effort and collaboration from our students, coaches and our academic support staff to achieve these goals and we are proud of all of their academic accomplishments.”
Elon had 10 teams post a perfect single-year rate – baseball, men’s cross country, men’s golf, men’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s basketball, lacrosse, softball, women’s tennis and volleyball. The women’s basketball team has earned a perfect single-year score for 11 straight years, while the softball and volleyball programs have done so for six straight years.
From a multi-year perspective, all of Elon’s 17 teams scored 980 or better. Men’s golf, women’s basketball, softball, women’s tennis and volleyball all scored a perfect 1,000. Lacrosse (998), women’s soccer (995), track & field (995), women’s cross country (993), football (992), men’s tennis (991), men’s basketball (990), and men’s cross country (990) all recorded scores of 990 or better and baseball (987), women’s golf (987) and men’s soccer (984) also posted excellent scores.
The APR is a real-time measure of eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes competing on every NCAA Division I athletics team. Each academic year, every Division I sports team across the country calculates its APR using a simple and consistent formula. Each term, scholarship student-athletes can earn 1 point for remaining eligible and 1 point for staying in school or graduating. For schools that do not offer scholarships, recruited student-athletes are tracked.
The most recent scores are based on a multi-year rate that includes scores from the 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21 academic years.
