MORRISTOWN, NJ — The Morristown High School football field is getting an upgrade.

The Morris School District submitted plans to the town planning board for review and recommendation for proposed new athletic field lighting at 50 Early Street, as well as a new electronic scoreboard at the football field.

The district requested that the Board conduct a cursory review, not to confirm or deny the proposed renovation. The exercise was mostly ceremonial, despite the board's unanimous support and a few recommendations.

According to school officials, the addition of lights will allow for night games, practices, and band rehearsals. An LED scoreboard will also be installed at the western end of the field to replace the one behind the east-side goalposts.

Concerns about lighting prompted Athletic Director Smitty Horton to explain that no practices will be held after 9 p.m., and district staff will make every effort to clear the field by 10 p.m.

According to site plans, the new lights will be located on the north and south sides of the track, atop pairs of 90- and 70-foot poles, and should have no negative impact on the neighboring community.

According to project architect Gregory J. Somjen, the new scoreboard will be on the west side and will be slightly larger than the current board, measuring 36 by 24 feet.

Because the presentation was only for recommendations, the board expressed their support for the project but made no binding decisions at the end of the meeting.
