POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (AP) — Pierce Holley was 20-of-24 passing, Joshua Stakely rushed for 123 yards and two touchdowns, and Georgetown scored 20 unanswered points in beating Marist 43-12 on Saturday.
Georgetown, which ranked 26th in the FCS last year with 253.7 passing yards per game, controlled the game on the ground. The Hoyas combined for 54 carries, 224 yards and four touchdowns.
Georgetown also got points from its specials teams. The Hoyas' second blocked punt of the game resulted in Jimmy Kibble’s 11-yard return for a touchdown as Georgetown led 27-6 early in the third quarter.
Holley passed for 175 yards, including a 7-yard touchdown to Joshua Tomas with 44 seconds left before halftime for a 20-3 lead. Georgetown had 257 yards and three touchdowns in the first half. The Hoyas also scored 16 straight points in the fourth.
The Hoyas’ defense intercepted DJ Arroyo twice in three pass attempts.
Brock Bagozzi threw for 154 yards and connected with Brandon Lombana on a 43-yard touchdown for Marist.

Ajla Tomljanovic had been hoping to beat Serena Williams, of course. Tomljanovic wanted to seize the chance for a big victory, wanted to add to her career highlights, wanted to reach the fourth round of the U.S. Open for the first time. Still, it was not easy for her to watch as tears rolled down Williams’ cheeks after Tomljanovic won 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-1 in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday night. Like most of the 23,000-plus spectators on hand, Tomljanovic considers herself a fan of Williams. Tomljanovic has a losing record in Grand Slam matches and this is the first time she is into the fourth round in New York.
Much like for so many other folks, Serena Williams’ last match at the U.S. Open was must-see TV for players still in the tournament, so Jessica Pegula and Petra Kvitova tuned in from their hotel rooms the night before their victories led off Saturday’s schedule and set up a fourth-round showdown. Kvitova, a two-time Wimbledon champion from the Czech Republic, credited Williams’ last stand with offering inspiration for her third-set tiebreaker victory over Garbiñe Muguruza. Pegula eliminated qualifier Yuan Yue 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-0. Men advancing included No. 2 Rafael Nadal, No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz and No. 9 Andrey Rublev.
Rafael Nadal has come back to win at the U.S. Open after cutting himself on the bridge of his nose when his racket bounced off the court and smacked him in the face during the fourth set against Fabio Fognini. Nadal was bleeding and took a medical timeout. The 22-time Grand Slam champion won the second-round match 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 at Arthur Ashe Stadium. They started on Thursday night and finished after midnight. Play resumed after about a five-minute delay when Nadal hurt himself on the first point of a game with Nadal leading 3-0 in the fourth set.
Michael Penix Jr. threw for 345 yards and four touchdowns, and Washington opened the Kalen DeBoer era with a 45-20 win over Kent State. DeBoer’s debut as Washington’s head coach was highlighted by an entertaining, innovative offense that Penix — also making his Huskies’ debut — ran flawlessly against the overmatched Golden Flashes. Penix led Washington on scoring drives on all five first-half possessions and touchdowns on the first four as the Huskies built a 31-13 halftime lead and cruised in the opener. Penix completed 26 of 39 passes and his yards passing were the third-most in his career.
No. 11 seed Jannik Sinner is headed to the fourth round of the U.S. Open after a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 win over Brandon Nakashima. Sinner’s 59th winner of the match was the final one. He only 16 aces out of all those winners. He had 19 forehand winners. Sinner reached the fourth round for the second straight year.
Connor Bazelak took Indiana on a 75-yard drive on its final series and Shaun Shivers capped it by scoring on a 1-yard run with 23 seconds left to rally the Hoosiers past Illinois 23-20. The season-opening victory ends Indiana's an eight-game losing streak and nine-game skid in Big Ten play. Bazelak was 28 of 52 with 330 yards and one TD pass in his Hoosiers debut. It was a frustrating finish for the Illini, who allowed only 70 yards in the second half before the final series. Chase Brown rushed for 199 yards and Tommy DeVito threw two touchdown passes for Illinois.
White Sox ace Dylan Cease lost his bid for a no-hitter when Luis Arraez singled for Minnesota with two out in the ninth inning. After Arraez’s hit, Cease struck out Kyle Garlick for his first career nine-inning complete game in Chicago’s 13-0 victory. Cease walked Jake Cave in the third and Gilberto Celestino in the sixth for Minnesota’s first two baserunners. Cave was erased when Gary Sanchez bounced into a double play. Celestino was stranded when Cease struck out Luis Arraez. Jake Cave hit a liner right at first baseman José Abreu for the final out of the Minnesota eighth.
Shaul Ladany survived a Nazi concentration camp and narrowly escaped the massacre of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. Decades later the 86-year-old has returned to visit the two places where he narrowly escaped death. On Saturday he brought family members to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where he was imprisoned as a boy in 1944. On Monday he will participate in a joint German-Israeli ceremony in Munich marking the 50th anniversary of the killing of 11 Olympians by Palestinian terrorists. “Those that tried to kill me are not alive anymore,” Ladany says. “We are still here.”
