Renovations scheduled to complete before the start of Clemson’s 2022 football season are underway in Death Valley.

Clemson expects the IPTAY- and athletics-funded renovations, approved by the board of trustees in 2019, to run in the $60 million to $70 million range. General contractor Brasfield & Gorrie is in charge of the work which will add new premium seating and club spaces in Memorial Stadium along with some other upgrades.

But the new video board is going to turn heads. Five times the size of the one they’re using now, the 7,166-square-foot video board will come with a new sound system and LED stadium lighting, according to the university.

But that’s just phase one.

Future renovations, to be complete sometime after the 2022 season, will see a new home locker room and an upgrade to the Rogers Family parking lot.

“We’re honored to work on one of the most visible structures on Clemson’s campus,” said Brasfield & Gorrie Vice President and Division Manager Ben Barfield. “Dozens of our teammates studied at Clemson University, and we recognize its place in the heart of people throughout South Carolina.

During construction, Howard’s Rock and its pedestal will be housed in a “secure location” until the project is complete. Meanwhile, a portion of Williamson Road near Memorial Stadium has been reduced to one lane, while a portion of the road will be closed entirely during the university’s Christmas break. Traffic will resume to a one-lane configuration once school resumes and will remain that way until the renovations are finished.

Brasfield & Gorrie, based out of Greenville, previously worked on other football stadiums, including Protective Stadium in Birmingham, Alabama; Jordan-Hare Stadium at Auburn University; Tiger Stadium at LSU; and others.
