OAKWORTH have made their pitch to join the Halifax League for next season.

The Craven League’s Wynn Cup winners, who also finished second in Division One, were represented at the Halifax League’s rules revision meeting at Pellon Social Club by father and son Michael and Jack Davison.

Davison Snr, who has been on Oakworth’s committee since 1992 and has been secretary for the last 17 years, told the meeting: “We want continual improvement and development. We cannot afford to stand still, and that is our ethos in general

“We don’t think that there is any point in making money and just keeping it in the bank.

“We have levelled the ground, got sightscreens, covers and an electronic scoreboard and I am even thinking about further development of the clubhouse and hybrid pitches.”

He explained that the potential switch of leagues had been player-led, and Davison Jnr revealed: “We started chatting about it at the back end of last year, which led into this year, and the feeling was unanimous.

“It is a big deal to venture out and, personally speaking, I am very excited at the prospect.”

Davison Snr explained that the first and second team are seeking to play on Saturdays, while their third team hope to join the Halifax League’s Sunday section.

Halifax League clubs now have until October 31 to vote electronically on whether to admit Oakworth, but, with the league executive committee’s endorsement, it would be a major surprise if they were not elected.

League secretary Tim Helliwell said: “They would be a fantastic addition to our league.”

Other clubs wanting to join the Sunday section, which may be expanded to four divisions, are Stainland and Slaithwaite.
