June 25-26, June 29-July 4: The San Diego County Fair offers the latest trends in home décor, garden designs and outdoor living, as well as a garden show. Experts, vendors and a master gardener will be able to answer questions. Admission tickets: $12-$20, $15 parking; events like concerts cost extra. June 29: Vermicomposting (worm composting) is an environmentally-friendly way to turn your food waste into nutrient-rich amendment for your plants or garden beds. Participants in the webinar hosted by the Solana Center for Environmental Innovation will learn how to set up a worm bin and which foods are suitable for the crawlers, among other topics. Cost: free. June 29: Kids young and old will be able to learn about carnivorous plants that chow down on insects during a class at an Armstrong Garden Centers store. On display will be the popular Venus Fly-Trap, Monkey Cup and other uncommon varieties. Cost: free. When: 10-11 a.m.; preregistration required. July 2: View water-saving landscapes during a docent-led tour at the Water Conservation Garden. Cost: free with garden admission. July 9: Buildings designed by well-known architects and structures that played civic roles in Oceanside will be highlighted during the Downtown Oceanside History Walk. The tour, hosted by the Oceanside Historical Society, showcases types of architecture ranging from modernism to Mission Revival. Cost: free; donations welcomed. July 11 and July 25: Learn the art of floral design using Ikebana in the Sogetsu-ryu school of style during classes at the Japanese Friendship Garden. Students are asked to bring flowers and branches, and implements if they have them. Novice students will start with the basic style, and experienced students will use their own themes to create flower arrangements. Fee: $25 JFG members, $30 nonmembers. July 14: A docent-led “Walking Tour of Historic Coronado” will show off the city in which Hollywood stars, princes and presidents have enjoyed. Tours are approximately 90 minutes and 2 miles at a comfortable pace. Cost: $20 adults, $5 children 12 and younger. July 15: A trio of plant-related experiences will be available during the monthly Plant Days and Orchid Odyssey event at the San Diego Zoo. The remodeled Orchid Odyssey greenhouse will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors also can tour the Carnivorous Plant Greenhouse from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost: Zoo admission. July 16: A succulent swap offers the opportunity to share different types of the drought-tolerant plants with other fans of the plants. Participants are asked to bring clippings to trade, share or put in pots. A certified Master Gardener will be on hand to answer gardening questions including watering and pest control. Cost: free. July 17: Interested in the architecture of Irving Gill? The “Seventh Avenue Walking Tour: A Progressive Vision,” hosted by the Save Our Heritage Organisation, illustrates Gill’s design progression from English Arts and Crafts to Prairie Style to his cubistic Early Modernism — all during 1905 and 1906.
