Seattle 5, Houston 4 — Seattle (55-47) finally found a way to beat division rival Houston (66-36) but it required a couple of ninth innings runs to do it. Up 3-0 after the first inning, the Astros took the lead by scoring one in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh. Abraham Toro became the hero for the Mariners though with a two-RBI single in the ninth to score Jesse Winker and Adam Frazier. Paul Sewald picked up his 13th save of the season with a clean bottom half of the ninth.
Eugene 10, Hillsboro 4 — The third inning Saturday is one Hillsboro (40-53) hopes to never remember in the loss at Eugene (56-36). The Emeralds scored nine runs in the frame, the first four coming via a bases loaded walk and three consecutive hit by pitches. A single from the next batter scored one, then Vaun Brown launched a grand slam to run the inning total to nine runs. Oh, and all of that came with two outs.
Seattle 82, Washington 77 — Seattle (19-11) got back into the win column with a road win at Washington (18-12). Tina Charles continues to play well with 16 points and nine rebounds for the Storm. Breanna Stewart the led the way offensively again with 18 points and Jewell Loyd pitched in 17 points. Sue Bird had seven assists.
Mariners trade for Castillo — The Seattle Mariners are all in. The team traded for Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Luis Castillo, believed to be the top pitcher on the trade market this season. The trade was first reported by ESPN's Jeff Passan.
Seattle is sending three of its top five prospects in Noelvi Marte, Levi Stoudt and Edwin Arroyo, along with RHP Andrew Moore. Castillo has a 2.86 ERA this season in 85 innings pitched. He's got 90 strikeouts to go with 28 walks and was named an All-Star a few weeks back for the Reds.
The Mariners haven't made the playoffs since 2001 when they won 116 games and lost to the Yankees in the ALCS. Sitting at 54-46 and 1.5 games up on Cleveland in the wild card race, Seattle fans hope adding Castillo can shore up a rotation to lead the Mariners back into the postseason.
Astros 11, Mariners 1 — At Houston, Justin Verlander was dominant en route to his 14th win and the Astros got to Robbie Ray (8-8) early. Ray lasted only 2.2 innings and was knocked out by a three-run third that put Houston ahead 4-0. Julio Rodriguez had two of Seattle's six hits including an RBI double in the eighth inning.
Emeralds 5, Hops 4 — At Eugene, Hops starter Jamison Hill struck out 13 in 5.2 innings and Hillsboro pitchers struck out 17. But the Emeralds rallied with three runs in the bottom of the eighth to win.
Elks 10, Pickles 9 — At Bend, an eight-run eighth put Portland in front by three runs, but the Elks scored two in the bottom of that inning and two in the bottom of the ninth to pull out the win. Evan Cloyd hit a three-run home run in the Pickles' eighth inning, but Bend outhit Portland 15-8.
Pac 12 media poll — Oregon football was picked to finish second in the Pac 12 this season in the preseason media poll. Oregon State was slotted into fifth place for the conference that is eliminating its two divisions starting this season. It's the highest preseason rankings for the Beavers since 2009. Utah was picked to win the conference and garnered 26 first place votes.
Houston 4, Seattle 2 — After sweeping Texas, Seattle (54-46) went on the road to open a three-game set at Houston (65-35) with a loss. The game was tied at two after the third inning when Ty France brought home a run on a sac fly and Carlos Santana brought home the other on a RBI groundout. Alex Bregman sealed it for the Astros though with a double in the eighth followed by a wild pitch to allow Bregman to score.
Hillsboro 8, Eugene 4 — Hillsboro (40-51) scored early and often to get the road victory over Eugene (54-36). The Hops scored five runs in the first two innings alone, highlighted by back to back doubles from Wilderd Patino and AJ Vukovich that brought home three runs in the second.
Connecticut 88, Seattle 83 — The Storm (18-11) fell on the road to the Sun (20-9) on Thursday despite five players reaching double figures in scoring for Seattle. Mariners 4, Texas 2 — Julio Rodriguez hit a three-run home run off the scoreboard at T-Mobile Park, going deep for the second consecutive game, as Seattle (54-45) finished off a three-game sweep of Texas (43-54).
The Rodriguez blast gave Seattle a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Marco Gonzales gave up four hits and two runs in seven innings.
Big tests await: a four-game series at Houston, July 28-31, and a three-game series at the New York Yankees, Aug. 1-3.
Eugene 5, Hops 4 — The host Emeralds (54-35) used a five-run third inning for the win.
Jairo Pomares and Luis Toribio hit two-run homers for Eugene.
Deyvison De Los Santos and Neyfy Castillo hit solo homers for Hillsboro (39-51).
American Legion baseball — The Medford Lithia Dodge Mustangs beat the Hillsboro Barbers 14-2 to win the Oregon American Legion AAA championship at Roseburg.
Pickles 2, Walla Walla 0 — Portland (28-14) beat the Sweets for the second night in a row at Walker Stadium.
Grand Prix of Portland — Single-day tickets have gone on sale for the IndyCar Series' Grand Prix of Portland at Portland International Raceway, Sept. 2-4.
Tickets for the 28th running of the open-wheel race at PIR can be purchased online at www.portlandgp.com. Tickets start as low as $20 for general admission and $70 for grandstand seats; a general admission three-day pass is $65, and a three-day grandstand seat starts at $85.
Timbers signing — The Portland Timbers have acquired Colombian defender Juan David Mosquera, 19, from Categoria Primera A side Independiente Medellin. He's under contract through 2026 with a club option for 2027.
He will occupy an international and a U22 initiative slot.
"Juan David is a talented player who at a young age has showcased his abilities at the club level as well as in important tournaments such as Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana," said Gavin Wilkinson, Timbers general manager and president of soccer. "For a young player, he has already amassed a good number of professional games at a high level, and we believe has all the attributes to be a great addition to the team. We are excited to welcome him and continue his development."
The Timbers have been shopping for a right back for a while. They extended the loan of Josecarlos Van Rankin through this season, so it remains to be seen if Mosquera can push for playing time down the stretch.
Portland's other two U22 Initiative acquisitions have contributed. A year after arriving as a U22 Initiative player, Santiago Moreno has earned regular minutes this season. In his first season, midfielder David Ayala has appeared in 14 games and made three starts.
Mosquera, who turns 20 on Sept. 5, will occupy the final Under-22 Initiative slot on the Timbers roster. He is signed through 2026, with a club option for 2027.
Mosquera joined Independiente Medellin as a 17-year-old in January of 2020 and has played in 438 matches in Colombia's top league. In 21 appearances in 2022, he scored three goals for Independiente.
T2 All-Star — Timbers2 midfielder Ian Shaul has named to the 2022 MLS NEXT All-Star Game roster. The match will feature 45 players in an East vs. West format at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minn. on Wednesday, Aug. 10. The 16-year-old Shaul has made eight appearances with T2 (six starts), logging 494 minutes. He made his MLS NEXT Pro debut on March 30, earning his first start against Earthquakes II. The Minnesota native joined the Timbers Academy in August of 2020 and has since been a member of the U-17 team.

He played last year for Las Vegas. He played 11 NFL seasons, including for the Seahawks' Super Bowl-winning team.
Preseason Pac 12 football — The Pac 12 preseason football teams were released Tuesday with Oregon landing 13 players on the three teams and Oregon State putting up nine.
Ducks offensive linemen TJ Bass and Alex Forsyth were both named to the First-Team along with defensive end Brandon Dorlus and linebacker Noah Sewell. Running back Byron Cardwell was tabbed for the Second-Team along with linebacker Justin Flowe, kicker Camden Lewis and defensive back Christian Gonzalez. Five more Ducks were named honorable mentions in defensive lineman Popo Aumavae, defensive backs Jamal Hill and Bennett Williams, wide receiver Seven McGee (All-purpose/Special Teams) and OL Ryan Walk.
For the Beavers, inside linebacker Omar Speights was the lone First-Team selection. On the Second-Team, OSU has OLs Joshua Gray and Brandon Kipper, defensive backs Haydon Grant and Rejzohn Wright, punter Luke Loecher and Jack Colletto on all-purpose/special teams. Jake Levengood, OL, and kicker Everett Hayes were tabbed as honorable mentions.
Seattle 5, Texas 4 — Seattle (53-45) hung on to beat visiting Texas (43-53) after giving up the lead late in the final two innings. Leading 3-1 going into the eighth, the Rangers scored twice to tie the game at three and then scored once more in the ninth to go up 4-3. A Cal Raleigh double brought home one run in the ninth for Seattle, followed by a Carlos Santana sacrifice fly to end the game and score Raleigh. Julio Rodriguez also hit a home in the first inning, his 17th of the year.
Eugene 5, Hillsboro 4 — Hillsboro (39-50) couldn't hold on for the road win over Eugene (53-35) after going up 4-2 after three innings. The Emeralds scored one run each in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to take the 5-4 lead and didn't give it back. Deyvison De Los Santos and Danny Oriente each had two RBI for the Hops.
Portland 8, Walla Walla 1 — The Pickles (27-14) scored six runs in the seventh inning to put away visiting Walla Walla. Jackson Van De Brake had the big single with the bases loaded to score two runs and a third came across on a bad throw from centerfield.
PSU football schedule update — Portland State football's home matchup with Sacramento State has been moved to Friday, Nov. 11 for the upcoming season. The game was moved due to a conflict with the OSAA high school football playoffs. The Nov. 11 matchup is the home finale this season for the Vikings before closing out 2022 on the road at Cal Poly. Tickets sold for the original date of Nov. 12 will be honored and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
Portland Thorns trade — In a swap of young defenders, the Portland Thorns have acquired Tegan McGrady from the San Diego Wave in exchange for defender Madison Pogarch.
The seventh pick in the 2019 NWSL Draft out of Stanford, the 24-year-old McGrady has played in 44 NWSL matches and helped Washington win the 2021 championship before she was traded to San Diego. She played in 10 matches (nine starts) for the Wave at left back.
Pogarch, undrafted out of Rutgers, signed with Portland in May of 2019. She appeared in 48 matches in all competitions with the Thorns.
Thorns general manager Karina LeBlanc said Pogarch approached the club earlier this season and said she would be open to a trade.
"Along with Po, we felt this was the right situation," LeBlanc said in the club's announcement of the trade. "We wish her all the best as she heads to San Diego." Thorns coach Rhian Wilkinson said that Pogarch will be missed. She described McGrady as an intense competitor who likes to attack from the fullback position.
The Thorns play at Racing Louisville on Friday.
Moultrie selected — Portland Thorns 16-year-old midfielder Olivia Moultrie has been selected for the United States team that will play in the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, which takes place Aug. 10-28 in Costa Rica. Moultrie has played seven times for the U-20 national team, scoring two goals.
The U.S. opens the tournament on Aug. 11 against Ghana (10 a.m., FS2). The U-20s face the Netherlands on Aug. 14 (4 p.m., FS1) and conclude the group stage against Japan on Aug. 17 (4 p.m., FS2).
Timbers goalkeeper honored — Portland Timbers goalkeeper Aljaz Ivacic was named to the MLS Team of the Week for Week 22 and forward Dairon Asprilla was named to the bench. Ivacic, 28, recorded a season-high six saves — including several difficult stops — in Portland's 2-1 Saturday win over the San Jose Earthquakes, helping Portland extend its unbeaten streak to seven games.
Grant High boys basketball — Dondrale Campbell is the new boys basketball coach at Grant High. Campbell makes the move from Cleveland High, where he coached five seasons and guided the Warriors to the PIL championship last season — that program's first league title in 60 years.

Oregon Sports Hall postpones event — The Oregon Sports Hall of Fame has postponed its 2022 induction ceremony. It will now take place on Oct. 9 at the Key Bank Club at Providence Park.
The event was scheduled for July 31, but was postponed because the air conditioning at the venue is awaiting parts for a repair and hot weather is forecast this week.
According to induction ceremony chair Mike Rose, tickets will be honored on Oct. 9 or refunds are available.
The 2022 class includes former Oregon State football coach Dennis Erickson, former Oregon and Barlow High basketball star Fred Jones, NBA referee Terry Durham, Portland Buckaroo hockey player Connie Madigan, high school baseball coach Dave Gasser, Oregon State women's basketball standout Felicia Ragland, masters track and field record-setter Becky Sisley and the Oregon Tech men's basketball teams from 2004, 2008 and 2012.
Portland State football — Three Viking seniors are preseason Big Sky Conference all-league selections. Defensive back Anthony Adams from Newberg, defensive lineman VJ Malo from West Seattle and receiver Beau Kelly from Scottsdale, Arizona are among 30 players selected by media members who cover the league.
• The Vikings were picked to finish eighth by the media and ninth by coaches in the Bg Sky Conference preseason polls released Monday as part of the Big Sky football media day. Montana was picked first in both polls, with Montana State and Sacramento State picked second or third.
Portland State women's basketball — Sofia Llanos, a 5-11 guard/forward from Tarragona, Spain, has joined the Vikings after playing her freshman season at Marshall University in West Virginia. Llanos saw minimal playing time at Marshall, but she played in Spain's third-tier national league at age 15 and moved up to the second-tier national league at 17.
Kraken sign defenseman — Seattle has signed Czechia defenseman Michal Kempny to a one-year contract ($750,000 average annual value). The 32-year-old split last season between the Washington Capitals and their AHL affiliate. He has played in 247 NHL games with Chicago and Washington.
Phil Knight Invitational — The schedule for the Phil Knight Invitational college basketball showcase coming to Portland Nov. 24-27 has been announced. There are five two-game sessions on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 24, five two-game sessions on Friday, Nov. 25 and six two-game sessions on Sunday, Nov. 27. Moda Center, Veterans Memorial Coliseum and the Chiles Center at the University of Portland are the venues.
Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, July 29 through Ticketmaster.com and Rosequarter.com.

Ty France went 3 for 3 with a solo home run and reached base four times.
Cal Raleigh had two hits and an RBI.
Chris Flexen earned the pitching win with five strikeouts, four hits and two runs allowed in six innings of work.
Diego Castillo gave up a solo home run to open the ninth and the next two Rangers reached base. Castillo struck out Ezequiel Duran, then Erik Swanson got the final two outs.
The win follows being swept by Houston. The Mariners play the Rangers Tuesday and Wednesday, then visit Houston for four games July 28-31 followed by three games at Yankee Stadium Aug. 1-3. The next homestand is seven games over six days Aug. 5-10 with four against the Los Angeles Angels and three against the Yankees.
Hops schedule — The Hillsboro Hops close out July with six games at Eugene and open August with six at Everett. Their next homestand is 12 games over begins August 9.
Pickles playoff push — The Portland Pickles play host to Walla Walla on July 27-28 at Walker Stadium in Lents Park, then hit the road to play Bend and Cowlitz before closing the West Coast League regular season Aug. 5-7 at home against Springfield.
