KINGSFORD — The Kingsford boys basketball team held West Iron County scoreless in the first quarter on its way to an 80-21 thumping of the Wykons on Tuesday at Kingsford.

The Flivvers (3-1) put the game away early, leading 30-0 after eight minutes. While West Iron (0-3) finally got on the scoreboard in the second quarter, Kingsford still led 49-8 at the break.

“We came out with nice effort,” Kingsford coach Dan Olkkonen said. “Everybody did a good job. Everything we did, we did for us to keep working on taking the next step.”

Nic Nora paced the Flivvers with 22 points to go with 15 from Michael Meneguzzo and 11 from Brody Kopp.

The Wykons were led in scoring by Peyton Hill’s 10 points. Logan McCord added seven.

Kingsford’s next game is on Jan. 6 at Marquette.

“After last week and this week, we’re in pretty good (shape) right now,” Olkkonen said. “Everybody is on the same page and we’re working pretty hard.

“Our next game at Marquette is a big deal if we want to put ourselves among the top of the better teams in the U.P.,” he added.

Bobcats rip FP to break drought

CRYSTAL FALLS — For the first time in “several years” according to Florence boys basketball coach Bryan Bomberg, the Bobcats came away from a contest against Forest Park with a victory.

The Bobcats locked down the Trojans defensively and put together a solid night offensively in their 69-32 triumph Tuesday at Eddie Chambers Gymnasium in Crystal Falls.

“Overall, a solid night,” Bomberg said. “I was proud of our team for how we played defensively. Our bench was really involved and our starters set the tone early on how we wanted to play.”

All five Florence starters scored in the first quarter as the Bobcats (4-2) ran out to a 17-7 lead. Evan Johnson hit two 3-pointers and William Kelley connected on one.

Dominic DeMuri added a couple of hoops to go with a bucket each from Patrick Milan and Logan Schuls.

Florence continued to stymie Forest Park (2-2) in the second quarter. The Trojans managed just four points as the Bobcats pulled away to a 29-11 lead at halftime.

Florence put the game away in the third by outscoring Forest Park 21-9 for a 50-20 advantage.

All 10 Bobcats scored in the game, led by 14 from Kelley and 12 from Johnson. The Florence reserves contributed 21 points to the victory.

Forest Park was topped by Ethan Kopf’s seven points.

Bomberg offered a compliment to his counterpart, Jason Price, who is in his first year as Forest Park varsity head coach.

“Jason’s doing a tremendous job with his guys,” he said. “They’re young but you can see things are there.”

Nordics fall to visiting Eagles

FELCH TOWNSHIP — North Dickinson rallied late before falling to Stephenson 42-38 in boys basketball on Tuesday.

The Nordics (0-3) got 12 points from Antonio Inglese and nine from Steven Holmes.

“Nick Conery gave us a lift off the bench after Colt Glasheen went out with an ankle injury,” said Nordics coach Chris Mattson. “The kids responded well with a strong fourth quarter.”

The Eagles led 32-22 entering the final frame.

“In the end, they shot free throws better,” Mattson said, noting Stephenson sank 7 of 9 and North Dickinson made just 3 of 8.
