Sidney Tildsley made a deal with the Devils, Saturday The freshman wrestler won four consecutive matches enroute to the 132-pound championship, as the Shawsheen Tech wrestling team placed fourth in New Hampshire at the Blue Devil Classic at Salem High School, Dec. 11. The team finished fourth out of 12 teams, earning 121 points. Lucien Trembley, Xavier Santiago and Brayton Carbone, all made the podium, earning medals for the Rams. A pair of seniors, Trembley scored second in the 120-pound division, while Santiago secured second in the 220-pound class. A sophomore, Carbone collected third in the 113-pound bracket. As a team, Shawsheen wrestled hard in memory of its late coach Mark Donovan, who passed away from cancer in early October.

The Lowell High wrestler went 4-0 with four pins in the 126-pound division, at Sharon Lombardo Dual Meet Tournament, Dec. 11

Lowell finished 3-1 in dual meets, defeating Franklin, 42-38, Needham, 51-18, and Johnston, RI, 57-13, before bowing out to their hospitable hosts Mount Hope High School, in Bristol, RI. Pak was one of three Lowell grapplers to go undefeated at 4-0, joining heavyweight Gustavo Ventura with three pins in the 285-pounds class, and Jaxson Phachansiri with another pin in the 106-pound bracket. Dimitri Sao was solid in the 160/170-class, going 3-1, with two pins. Winnichi Chum also came up big in the 195/220-class at 3-1 with a pin. Ryan Chum (120), Hussein Alobaidi (138/145) and Jose Molina (145/152) each broke even at 2-2 with a pair of pins each. Other Raiders picking up varsity wins for Lowell included Lenny Vertier (113), Chris Dubey (132), Quin Foyle (138), Rennie Cyprian (152), Randy Valdez (170), Amrin Pich (182), Luis Gomez (195) and Cael Wangui (220). Lowell travels to North Andover, Dec. 15 for its next dual meet, before competing in the Wilmington Sons of Italy Tournament at Shriners Auditorium, Dec. 18.

No grounding Greater Lowell’s Garrett Garrett Ayotte picked up three wins, as the Greater Lowell wrestling team earned its first two victories of the season. Greater Lowell outworked Woburn, 54-30, and Malden Catholic, 24-13, before bowing out to Concord-Carlisle, 48-27. Double winners for Greater Lowell included Gab Bischoff and Melvin Martinez.

Dragoumanos delivers for Tyngsboro-Dracut Jack Dragoumanos was one of four wrestlers to run the table, as Tyngsboro-Dracut opened the season at 3-0. Tyngsboro-Dracut couldn’t be stopped beating Newton South, 43-30, Burlington, 63-18, and Chelmsford, 42-33. Dragoumanos dominated in the 120-pound class. The team was also bolstered by three wins each from Amauri Herandez (106), Ty Stewart (138), and Luke McHugh (182/195). Carter Johnson (113), Nick Nicosia (126), Charlie Maraganis (160), JT Shaffer (182/195), Trevor Croce (220), and Drew Richardson (HVY), also scored two wins each to seal the clean sweep.

Chelmsford wins pair for new coach The Chelmsford High wrestling team picked up two out of three wins opening day, Dec. 11. Coach Chris Piscione’s squad beat Burlington, 51-21, and denied Newton South, 58-24, before getting taken down by Tyngsboro/Dracut, 42-33.

Nashoba Tech takes down Lynn Tech Zack Mckenna (132) was one of four Nashoba Tech wrestlers that won three matches opening weekend. Nashoba Tech topped Lynn Tech, 60-6, and tied Essex Tech, 36-36, but fell to Whittier, 72-9 and Greater Lawrence, 48-30, going 1-2-1 overall. McKenna mastered the 132-pound division, going 3-1 on the morning. He was joined by Joe Rogers (160), Anthony Debenedictis (195), Elija Murphy (220) and Shaun Driscoll (285).

Leonard leads Pelham to victory Russell Leonard made short work of the competition, as the Pelham wrestling team trampled Alvirne, 27-12. Wrestling out of the 220-pound division, Leonard leveled Liam Mortenson by fall in 1:18. Liz Donovan worked her magic in the 113-pound class winning by fall over Morgan Gore at 3:36. Billy Nicholls (160) earned a hard-fought decision over Grant Dickieson. Nathan Maslanek (120), Jacob Kulick (126), Micheal Harrington (145), and Shawn Boudreau (170) also won by forfeit.

Westford wrestlers hold own in opener Jack Gould and Mike McDonald were an undefeated 4-0, as the Westford wrestling team went 3-1 on opening day. The Grey Ghosts beat Weymouth, 45-3, Londonderry 42-42 (via tiebreaker) and Beverly, 45-33, before bowing out to St. John Prep, 63-12. A pair of seniors, Gould was great in the 138-pound division, while McDonald ruled the roost at 195. Seniors Dan Hickley (113) and Cole Stickel (220) were also solid at 3-1.

Hockey Pickett pots pair in Cobblestone Tourney Senior Michael Pickett netted a pair of goals, as Lowell defeated Cambridge Matignon, 6-4, in the first round of the Lowell Cobblestone Tournament. Junior Colin Pickett potted a goal and added two assists, while freshmen Matthew Lesniak (three assists), Jack Gallagher (assist) and eighth grader Ned Akashian (assist) added the others. Seniors Kyle Frechette, Ben Kotsifas and sophomore Teddy Steinberg each registered an assist. Eighth grade goalie Grady Avila made 16 saves, including stopping a penalty shot to earn the win for Lowell. Lowell takes on Danvers in the championship game of the tournament, Sunday, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m. at Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell.

Swimming Nashoba’s Eastman excels against Tantasqua Abby Eastman made it look easy as the Nashoba girls swim team beat Tantasqua, 103-57. A senior, Eastman placed first in the 500 freestyle with a school record, and sectionals qualifying time of 5:49.09. She also placed first in the 100 backstroke with a sectionals qualifying time of 1:06.81. She also played a key role on a pair or relay wins. The 200 Medley Relay of Grace Roth, Eastman, Emma Reiner, and Bethany Anderson, placed first with a sectionals qualifying time of 2:05.19, while the 400 Freestyle Relay of Sophie Colbert, Eastman, Roth, and Reiner also placed first (4:35.18). The 200 Freestyle Relay of Anderson, Campbell Phillips, Colbert, and Michelle Nguyen placed first with a time of 2:02.28. Nashoba sophomore Campbell Phillips also placed first in the 200 freestyle (2:19.90). In the boys bracket, Nashoba fell to Tantasqua, 86-31. Nashoba’s 200 Freestyle Relay team of Peter DeCruz, Giovanni McKinney, George Taylor, and Thomas Hastings placed first in the meet with a time of 2:10.62. Nashoba Swim and Dive team is a co-op with Hudson, Marlborough, and Clinton High Schools. Nashoba’s next meet is Dec. 16 against Worcester at the Worcester Boys and Girls Club at 3:30 p.m.

Track Lowell’s Cady masters 300 in opener Becca Cady led the charge, as the Lowell girls track and field team opened its season at the MSTCA Winterfest, Dec. 11. A senior, Cady finished first in the 300 meters with a time of 45.29. Junior Ronnie Jones captured second in the shot put (32-10). Lowell took three places in the long jump with sophomore Anneliese Nogueira finishing 4th (14-5.5), senior Carleigh Ahern 7th (14-3) and sophomore Quinn Petzold 8th (14-2). Senior Christina Grillakis was the final individual place winner, finishing 8th in the 1000 (3:30.48). In the relays, Lowell was 3rd in the 4X200 (Ahern, Bridget Geary, Britney Ogiegor, R. Cady) and 4X800 (Annie GIlman, Sabrina Cady, Serena Nguyen, Jackie Peirce) and placed 4th in the 4×400 (Grillakis, Katrina Russell, Nogueira, Patricia Kalemera). Lowell returns to action next Sunday, Dec. 19, at the MSTCA Speed Classic.
