Scoreboard: Westford Academy's Kannan throws perfect game

Ragini Kannan was picture perfect on the mound, Tuesday.

The Westford Academy softball pitcher tossed a perfect game, as the Ghosts defeated Lincoln-Sudbury 5-0, in the first round of the DCL Conference championships. A Brandeis-bound senior, Kannan held Lincoln-Sudbury to no hits, no walks and no earned runs, while striking out 11.

Westford got all the offense it would ultimately need in the first inning, as Mia Clark clubbed an RBI double off a 3-2 count, scoring a run. The Ghosts varsity tallied seven hits in the contest. April Collamore and Lillian Proulx led the attack with two hits each. Kannan was backed by some slick fielding behind her, with the Ghosts playing error free ball. A catcher, Clark led the way making 11 putouts.

Kannan forced Lauren Blanchette to groundout to end the game. Claudia Mazzocchi took the loss for Lincoln-Sudbury. The Bulldog ace surrendered five runs off seven hits over six innings, striking out four and walking none.

Izzy Coit tossed a one-hitter striking out eight, as Notre Dame/Innovation Academy (11-6) picked up its 11th win of the season.

Carly Smith and Jacqui Martineau had back-to-back home runs to lead the Academy offense.

Bella Fernald had five hits including a home run and five RBI, as Bedford best Shawsheen.

Cassidy Schuman had four hits, four runs and four RBI. Laney Mead laced three hits and two RBI. Ellie Mitchell scored four runs. Lulu Steele got the win hurling 5 innings with five strikeouts. She also had two hits and two runs.

Middle hitter Matthew Zegowitz scored 13 kills, eight blocks and an ace, as Westford blanked Cambridge Rindge and Latin.

Outside hitter Jake Aylward connected on 10 kills and two blocks, as the Ghosts won in straight sets 25-11, 25-19, 25-13. Outside hitter Jacob Holahan handled seven kills and two blocks.

Keith Shaheen scored seven kills and six service points, as Central Catholic (5-15) fell to Haverhill.

The Crusaders were curtailed in straight sets 25-16, 25-17, 25-20. Central’s Ryan McShan registered a team-high nine kills and a block. Aiden Herries handled 10 digs and an ace. Michael Nguyen fed the offense with 22 assists.

Julia Trainor tallied three goals, as Billerica (9-4 MVC, 12-4) bumped off North Andover.

Holding a slim 3-1 lead at halftime, the Indians were sparked by big goals from Paige Murphy, Delaney Burns and Giovanna Gulinello. Sara MacLeod also picked up an assist. Billerica netminder Keira Moore made seven saves in the win.

Casey Mitchell capped a seven-point night with three goals, as Lowell (9-10) beat Haverhill

Cate Shanahan scored three goals, Tess Hollingsworth potted a pair. Jacqueline Peirce and Nora Funaro also found the back of the net. Goalie Sara Skaff made seven saves for the win.

Lowell Catholic senior midfielder Charlotte Morey had three goals and an assist to eclipse the 100-point mark (101), as Lowell Catholic lost to Shawsheen.

Sophomore attack Emma McBournie netted two goals and an assist. Senior attack McKenna Green and junior midfielder Catherine Antwi each garnered a goal. Sophomore goalie Avery Tucker had an assist.

Kam Tremblay tallied four goals and an assist, as Billerica (13-2) clinched its MVC championship.

Aidan Gibbons garnered four goals, while Brady Hunt hammered three goals and two assists. Dom Terrazzano (three goals, assist) and Conor Doherty (three goals) also crashed the net. They were fueled by the great playmaking of Steven Lankowski, Jason Martin and Cameron Penti (assist). Steven Lucozzi also went 17-for-23 on faceoff draws.

Billerica travels to Duxbury, Thursday.

Ryan Melesky edged Rishi Krishnan at third singles 6-3, 7-5, as Central Catholic defeated Chelmsford 4-1 Zach Channen led the Crusaders singles sweep stopping Andrew Petersen at first singles 6-1, 6-0. Arnav Lele took down Mishal Behera at third singles 6-4, 6-2. The first doubles team of Sayomik Sett and Anikait Singh earned Chelmsford’s only win, dropping James Diamantis and Luca Beltrandi 6-4, 4-6, 12-10. Central’s second doubles unit of Om Anghadi and Garrett Russell wrapped up the match beating Michael Hamlin and Jack Pelletier 6-0, 0-6, 6-4.

Gavin Bombara brought down Sean McCaffrey at second singles 8-6, as Bishop Guertin topped Manchester Memorial in a postseason sweep.

First singles star Dean Liakos led the way taking out Tiago Mendes 8-3. Ryan Wallat followed suit at third singles cutting off Cam Brown 8-1. Aditya Prasad prevailed over Tyler Telge at fourth singles 8-6. Will Moynihan defeated Daniel Betancu at fifth singles 8-4. Ronan Bradshaw was no match for David Ruge at sixth singles 8-2. In doubles action, Liakos and Bombara blitzed Mendes and Brown at first double 8-4. Wallat and Prasad pushed out McCaffrey and Telge at second doubles 8-3. Sean Finnegan and Moynihan completed the sweep beating Betancu and Ruge 8-5.

Rohan Francis flipped Xavier Hicks at first singles 7-5, 4-6 (10-2), as Groton-Dunstable upended Uxbridge.

Zach Aster topped Timothy Makynen at second singles 7-5, 6-0. Josh Dai defeated Matthew Hinchliffe at third singles 4-6, 6-3 (8-10). First doubles tandem Tom Wong and Alex Caruso tamed Tyler Richardson and Jason Fontes 6-1, 6-3. Nathan Cruz and Devin Patel completed the sweep at second doubles stopping Joshua Johnson and Alan Mages 7-5, 4-6 (10-7).

Meg Washburn led a singles sweep, as Central Catholic (6-6) clipped Chelmsford.

Washburn scored the first singles win 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. Meg Malolepszy matched her at second singles 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Kaya Asmar completed the sweep at third singles 6-0, 6-4. The Lions roared in doubles action. Emily Magnant and Erin McNulty earned a first doubles win over Alessandra Sacchetti and Alana Shanahan 6-1, 6-4. Second doubles unit Amiyah Milona and Keya Upadhyay were also victorious at second doubles besting Melina Panagiotakopolous and Caroline Sierpina 6-2, 6-3.

Darsh Patel celebrated Senior Day the only way she knew how.

The Lowell senior stopped Shanalee Then at first singles 7-5, 7-5, as Lowell (2-12 MVC, 4-12 overall) beat Lawrence at Shedd Park.

Upperclassmen Maddy Frenette was fantastic at third singles defeating Meli Olmeda 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, in what proved to be the deciding match. Meanwhile senior Maegan Cole teamed up with Siya Patel to upend Grace Vasquez and Genesis Ventura at second doubles 6-1, 6-2. In other action, second singles senior Portia Yeboah yielded to Jadelyn Him 6-2, 6-2, whole first doubles team Ashley Martinez and Fabiola DeJesus defeated Lowell’s Natalie Sandler and Sophia Gikas 6-4, 6-0. Lowell saluted all five of its seniors including Kimleng Kit.

Lowell plays host to Haverhill Wednesday, May 25 at 3:30 p.m. Their final match of the season is set for Thursday, May 26 against Chelmsford, at 3:30 p.m.

Shane Costello had two hits and an RBI, as Shawsheen (10-1 CAC, 16-2) lost to Arlington Catholic.

Mavrick Bourdeau (two hits, RBI) and Ryan Santini (hit, run) provided some pop. Starting pitcher Jack Glennon kept Shawsheen in the game. He allowed seven hits and three earned runs, punching out six. Shawsheen plays host to Greater Lawrence in a CAC matchup, May 25.
