There have been further details of Tom Cruise’s potential blast-off into space for a movie as Universal is hoping to make it a reality.

He’s climbed the tallest building in the world, hung on the side of a plane, and jumped 106 skydives with a broken ankle for one stunt in Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Tom Cruise’s next daredevil move? Going to space for the sake of Hollywood.

That’s right, the adventurous actor could actually bring the real space experience to the camera – none of that green screen magic.

Universal Filmed Entertainment Group chairman Donna Langley told the BBC that the studio is committed to sending Tom to the International Space Station. With no confirmed date for the film’s release, there’s no telling when he’ll be blasting off.

The War of the Worlds actor was beaten by Yulia Peresild and director Klim Shipenko in the space race last year. Russian native Yulia spent 12 days on the ISS shooting the first movie in orbit in October 2021, writes The Guardian.

British film executive Dame Donna Langley has divulged further information about Tom’s plans to shoot to zero gravity. Initial plans first circulated in May 2020 after Deadline reported that the Top Gun actor was working alongside Space X and NASA to make the ambitious idea a reality.

Talking to the BBC, Donna revealed: “I think Tom Cruise is taking us to space, he’s taking the world to space. That’s the plan, we have a great project in development with Tom that does contemplate him doing just that.”

He is predicted to take a rocket to the space station, where Tom will “hopefully be the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station”.

Donna added that the Oscar-nominee pitched the project over Zoom during the pandemic, alongside The Bourne Identity director Doug Liman. The story “actually takes place on Earth and then the character needs to go up to space to save the day”.

Sorry Tom, but Fast And Furious 9 did it first when they sent Tej (Ludacris) and Roman (Tyrese Gibson) in their rocket car.

2022 has been a hugely successful year for the actor, with Top Gun: Maverick becoming the highest-grossing 2022 movie worldwide. Standing at over $1 billion, the sequel beat The Batman and Doctor Strange 2, two franchises with a loyal fanbase.

“Single-handedly saving cinema,” a fan praised of the space film’s latest update.

“I hope to see him running on the moon,” another commented. He does have a pretty impressive run; we’re not sure about slow motion though.

Not everyone is on-board with the idea as CGI has contributed to impressive and visually aesthetic space scenes over the years, such as Interstellar.

“He is only doing it for publicity for the film,” one criticized. “As CGI with 20 cameras is much better than reality when you would be lucky to get one good camera set up outside the space station.”
