Two pieces of Roger Bacon High School history are currently for sale to the highest bidders.

The two vintage Fair Play scoreboards were listed for sale on eBay at the end of December.

Roger Bacon, in St. Bernard, was built in 1929. The scoreboards hung in the original gym, which also doubled as an auditorium, for more than 50 years.

The gym was used as auxiliary practice space for sports teams until the new Friar’s Club opened last year. Home games were moved to the Fogarty Center when it opened in 1985.

Since the school no longer needs the practice space, an auditorium renovation is in the works.

School administrators said they plan to reopen previously covered skylights, remove balcony lockers, extend the stage, install new seating and resurface the floor. They plan to save the iconic Spartan logo at center court.

The original gym wall mats and basketball backboards and hoops have already been removed.

The two scoreboards each measure 6 1/2 feet wide by 7 feet tall. Bidding began at 99 cents and quickly shot up into the hundreds of dollars.

The highest bidder gets the scoreboard of their choice. They must be picked up at the school on Vine Street.

The winners will be announced at the annual Roger Bacon Sports Stag on Jan. 15. If the scoreboards do not meet reserve bids, the auctions will be carried over to the Roger Bacon Evening of Excellence on April 25.

Administrators have not said how much they expected the scoreboards to bring in.

Both scoreboards are operational and come with controls, although the auction listing says some replacement bulbs may be needed.

Bidding ends Wednesday at 4 a.m. Click here to place a bid.
